Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Broad Extreme Heat Alerts Throughout Multiple States

This situation come after recent fires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing heat to much of the region.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a volatile situation for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was left in darkness recently after strong gusts damaged the urban electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further issues as utility companies work urgently to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Fog Covers Sunny Region

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Islands

Turning to Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in intense rainfall, strong winds and even snow to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this popular tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, forcing its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on several islands. The influence of the storm is expected to ease this week with more typical conditions taking hold.
