Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.
After a definitive second-round vote, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Built On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly focused on promises to address increasing violence and significantly curb immigration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans included Trump-inspired measures such as building detention centers, high walls, electric fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northern border.
Part of a Regional Trend
Several observers interpret Kast's victory as aligning with a larger right-wing shift in South America, following this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also frame it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Mandate
Despite his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are counted together.
This political situation might complicate his policy goals, including a promise to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"There are many questions about what a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not said how he will implement them," noted a political professor.
The expert added, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts typical of the right-wing. However the area with far less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the race."
