In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.
