Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
